If I owned my own modem, the payback would be >4 years so its now not worth it to own my own, when comcast will replace it with the newest version in less than 24hrs. I had dropped the xfinity/stream $20/month, so that was the bill now. As yttv has the major broadcast channels, and the independents are excellently covered by locast/seattle (I'm much too far from both seattle and portland broadcast towers). My bill, for the 100/5 service, went from ~$122 to $80/month, a reduction of $40+. Then 4 months ago, they pretty radically reduced the pricing of the residential modem rental when bundled with the unlimited option. So, they have the infrastructure in place for a complete streaming package, at a price. They also started pushing their own streaming box, 'flex', free for first unit but monthly fees for additional, just like cable boxes, but app for roku so all that totally avoidable. At the same time they offered their streaming service, xfinity stream, with "free" data, as the data is sourced from their inhouse system and doesn't travel across the public internet the base package included ALL local broadcast channels, including subchannels, with dvr service of 20hrs, later increased to 40hrs. Up until ~3yrs ago, the only way to avoid it (at that time 1TB, this year increased to 1.2TB) was to subscribe to unlimited business class then the management back in philly decided to offer unlimited to residential class subscribers at an additional fee of $40/month. Comcast has always had data caps on residential services out west, which includes washington, oregon, etc. Several posts referring to data caps, thought I'd jump in. But understand that if you decide to drop one of the services on a Double Play, you pay full rack rate on the service you keep. I read my contract before I signed it and knew what I was getting into. Also, my stupid little town is a Frontier ILEC outpost surrounded by AT&T in every direction, so I'll be getting AT&T fiber never, and my only alternative for HSD is paying Frontier $45/month for "up to" 12/1 megabit ADSL.)ĭon't get me wrong, I'm not on the COMCAST IS GOING TO RIP YOU OFF LOL Train. Since my wife and I both work from home and our work traffic is more than the monthly cap, dropping xFi Advantage isn't a practical option. (Before anyone swoops in with "BuT yOu DoN't NEED iT!1!1", the tiers only drop $10. Even though I had been paying $115 for the same service before I added video. So if I drop video, I'm looking at $144/month just for gigabit + xFi Advantage. Since I took them up on what was a deal last year, they have zero incentive to play ball with me on being an internet-only customer. Cartoon Network) and moved them to a different tier. They've also taken away basic channels (e.g. In the past year, they've raised the taxes and fees (the part of my bill not locked in under contract) so that I'm paying just under $164. Even so, that put my bill at $159 after taxes and fees. I didn't rent any boxes, but took a CableCARD and built my own DVR with an HDHomeRun tuner. Adding xFi Advantage (for unlimited transit) brought that to $135. So, I did this last year and switched from YTTV to Xfinity because their X1 Extra (125+) package had basically the same channels.
